Quality measures are a way to capture and express data that demonstrate the performance of quality improvement initiatives and programs. While an initial focus of quality measures was intent on staffing and patient outcomes, there is a growing need to measure the performance of quality improvement initiatives and programs. Meaningful measures must be relevant and used regularly in accountability efforts. One way that hospital leaders can ensure the quality of their organization’s improvement efforts is through effective measurement strategies.

Despite the importance of improving quality, it is also difficult for healthcare professionals to appreciate its importance as well as its application in daily clinical practice. Majority of physicians perceive QI largely in a negative light and are indifferent about participating. It is important for physicians to understand the history of QI efforts and methodology to be able to appreciate its contribution in improving care for patients.

The importance of pediatric quality measurement and improvement (PQMP) is getting a lot of attention these days, and with good reason. The National Quality Strategy created by the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) National Advisory Committee focuses on improving health care quality. Qualified pediatric health care providers can receive recognition for performance by participating in PQMP.
